Theory and Practice: What Empirical Study Tells Us About the Future of the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS)

January 2008 heralded the arrival of the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS). This industry-based system arrived complete with sets of Practice and Approval Standards2, intended for voluntary compliance by stakeholders. While its implementation was swift, the System's arrival was certainly not unexpected. The introduction of the NMAS reflected a journey towards mediator accreditation that had been gaining momentum within Australia over several years. The System was unanimously endorsed at the National Mediation Conference held in Hobart in 2006, indicating the mediation community's broad support for its key precepts.
