Deborah Lockhart Word from the CEO It’s that time of year again! I am excited to open the 5th Annual Australian ADR Awards for your nominations. This is a time to reflect on and celebrate the tremendous work that you and others have contributed in the field of ADR over the past 12 months. COVID-19 has not diminished this important work, it has just shifted our media.
In keeping with ADC’s commitment to recognising excellence in in the field, there are several new ADR Award Categories in 2020, and I encourage you start nominating early.
Not shying away from the many challenges of 2020, ADC is stepping into Friday 13 November for the ADR Awards Gala; Back to Black, Chic. ‘Save the Date’ and get ready for a night to remember, as we celebrate the announcement of the Australian ADR Award winners.
ADC’s annual Supreme Court ADR Address Series has become a significant part of our thought leadership calendar. The lockdown has meant that more of us can share the insights from speakers. My warm thanks to Ms Leanne Liddle, Director of the Aboriginal Justice Unit for her leadership in presenting this year’s important, and thought provoking ADR Address of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. You can access Leanne’s Address through ADC’s Resource Library linked below.
ADC has for many years been running a mediation scholarship programme and other ADR training courses for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders across Australia. ADR offers all Australians a quintessentially self-determinative approach to resolving their conflict. As practitioners we recognise and celebrate dialogue, negotiation and empowerment; features powerfully embodied in the drafting of The Uluru Statement from the Heart. Black Lives Matter, and in standing with all Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders I encourage you to read this potent Statement, again. Linked below.
ADC has long teamed up with ACICA to offer a highly regarded Internship Program. Supporting our University students, as well as recent graduates has never been more important. In an economic recession there are many losers, but no demographic is as severely impacted as our young people. With the ADR industry so closely aligned with commercial Australia, the broader community and the legal sector, these young people are our tomorrow. In 2020, ADC is collaborating with the ICC to ensure that the ADC-ICC Asia Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition remains an opportunity to empower tomorrow’s business leaders and legal minds, equipping them with skills to better meet the dispute resolution needs of international commerce in an expanding and increasingly complex marketplace. Currently in full swing with 22 teams from across the region competing, I extend a warm invitation for you to volunteer during the competition, and attend the Grand Final on 1 September 2020. It’s all online!
International commerce is also squarely on our calendar earlier in the month. ADC is honoured to have Mr Peter Varghese AO speak on 11 August 2020 on his highly regarded report ‘An India Economic Strategy to 2035’. Webinar details below.
ADC understands the constraints of the pandemic, but also the opportunities. ADC’s accelerated online mediation training programme has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing our participants to continue with work and family commitments. Our upcoming programmes start on 5 August and 16 September. Further details are below.
Finally, a reminder to keep sending in your photos for the Lockdown Gallery. Itis a great way to share our experiences. Stay well, and stay safe!

In the last week of May 2020, Chief Justice Michael Grant welcomed Ms Leanne Liddle and a film crew into the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory to film the 2020 ADR Address. Our warm thanks to the Chief Justice, Ms Liddle and Aboriginal Broadcasting Australia for their generosity and commitment in sharing this important Address with an Australia-wide audience during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Leanne Liddle’s Address identifies the challenges and barriers for an Alternative Dispute Resolution model that if delivered, may change the destiny and history of Aboriginal people in the NT and deliver real justice in our backyard.

Party Autonomy during COVID-19; testing the reach of the tribunal’s mandate In the first in our series of our Directors discussing a range of ADR hot topics; ADC Director and Partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Bronwyn Lincoln, recently joined in conversation with eminent jurists and academics Professor Marilyn Warren, Professor Clyde Croft and Drossos Stamboulakis from Monash University. Five practical steps to ensure due process during virtual hearings If you missed the live event, you can catch up with the video now on ADC’s Resource Library, and read Bronwyn Lincoln’s summary of the practical steps to ensuring due process during virtual hearings. The Uluru Statement From the Heart All too recent tragic events and collective realisations in Australia and abroad have brought to light many questions and opportunities to learn, reflect, educate, share and deconstruct. It is impossible to understand the gravity of pain felt by black, Indigenous and people of colour (‘BIPOC’), yet we can scrutinise the problems that perpetuate inequality in ourselves, our communities, our governments and our legislatures.
These times also offer a unique opportunity to leverage skills that can assist in creating systems and structures that are tailored to the lived experiences of people. The ADR industry in Australia can offer significant powers of communication to facilitate culturally-responsive, timely, holistic and cost-effective approaches to dispute resolution that can empower change.
