CONTENTS: A word from the CEO ADC’s Year in Review Video Thought Leadership 35th Anniversary Training Sizzling Summer Courses Australian ADR Award Winners Disputes Management ADC Spaces Deborah Lockhart Word from the CEO Season’s Greetings! My warmest thanks to you all for your continued support of ADC during this unprecedented year. Despite the significant challenges caused by COVID-19, 2020 has been another successful year for the ADC. As year-end draws near it is time to reflect on the unique circumstances created by COVID-19, the year that was, and our year ahead.
Key to ADC’s success in 2020 was its ability to adapt its program to virtual events, and our wonderful clients’ willingness to adapt with us. Moving ADC’s mediation training online was a particularly successful move; enabling us to increase engagement for our courses and create more flexibility than ever for our clients.
ADC’s innovation extended to events that I would previously never have considered possible. Starting with the pivot online for our Masterclass ‘Mediating in Headlights’ in March, through to hosting the ADC-ICC Asia Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition in September, and then presenting the online extravaganza that was our recent Australian ADR Awards 2020. So much has been happening, that my talented ADC team has put together a wonderful video presentation for you on ADC’s year. The link is below, and I hope that you enjoy!
Also in this Bulletin we are starting a series profiling category winners in the Australian ADR Awards 2020. Recognising and celebrating achievements in the field is central to ADC’s role in advancing excellence in ADR. May I again extend my warm congratulations to all finalists and award winners in 2020. ADC is set to provide another superb program of events in 2021. Building directly off our training success, we kick off a celebratory year with our 35th Anniversary Mediation Program in January, including addresses from Chief Justice Tom Bathurst AC and The Hon. Terry Sheehan AO. We could not be prouder to be launching our 2021 calendar with this historic professional development opportunity.
We continue our exciting start to 2021 with the 3rd Annual ADR Address of the Supreme Court of South Australia on 18 February 2021. We are honoured to host The Hon. Justice Samuel Doyle as our guest speaker who will be discussing the theme, “Musings on Compulsory Mediation”. Read more about this compelling hybrid event in the Bulletin, and register to get the date in your diary.
The Bulletin also contains more information about our sizzling summer courses, an opportunity to learn more about ADC’s Fast Track Mediation Processes and more details about our world class facilities and services.
Finally, I would like to expressly thank you our valued friends, colleagues and clients, ADC’s Board and Patron, my team of dedicated Associates and all of our volunteers and interns who bring daily laughter and enthusiasm to our work. My thanks also to ADC’s unparalleled faculty who have been the backbone of our training journey in 2020. Thank you to all for your spacing friendship, adaptability and resilience this year. Through your support ADC has continued to thrive during the pandemic.
On behalf of the ADC team, I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas, a relaxing spacing summer break, and a safe, successful and serene 2021!

June 2021 Gitanjali Bajaj – Arbitration Practitioner of the Year 2020 Co-Head of International Arbitration (Asia-Pacific), Sydney-based partner Gitanjali Bajaj adds another win for the team as the 2020 Arbitration Practitioner of the Year. With a strong focus on the infrastructure and construction, oil and gas, transport, power and clean energy sectors, Gitanjali has been praised for her in-depth sector knowledge and practical understanding of global arbitration institutions. When not advising clients, Gitanjali regularly contributes her expertise to the industry – Gitanjali is an Executive Director of ACICA, and over the past 12 months she has been a panellist for various conferences and webinars, including those hosted by Women in Law, CIArb, DFAT, ADC and ACICA.
Speaking on her ADR Award and that of her team, Gitanjali said “It is a real honour to win two awards at the 2020 Australian Disputes Centre's Alternate Dispute Resolution Awards. The ADC is Australia’ leading organisation dedicated to advancing timely and cost effective use of ADR processes. Our selection by the ADC from a field of outstanding arbitration teams and practitioners is reflective of our team’s hard work and commitment to excellence in this field. We are very proud of this achievement and look forward to new successes in the future.”
You are rightfully proud Gitanjali and team. The calibre of ADR Award nominees means that these categories are hotly contested. Congratulations on your successes!
DLA Piper – ADR Practice Group of the Year 2020 DLA Piper’s Australian arbitration practice continues to go from strength to strength. Led by industry-recognised experts across each of their national offices (Gitanjali Bajaj in Sydney, Liam Prescott in Brisbane, Gowri Kangeson in Melbourne, Richard Edwards and Corey Steel in Perth), the team routinely act for clients on complex cross-border disputes across a full-service suite of sectors.
Innovation is woven into the fabric of DLA Piper’s arbitration processes, which strives at every step of the process to ensure maximum time and cost efficiency for their clients. It is testament to such an ethos that the team has successfully tackled the challenge that has been 2020, and allowed their arbitration practice in the past 12 months to continue to flourish. Over the past year, the team has been engaged with advising domestic and international clients in substantial arbitrations under the ICC and SIAC rules, with a focus on energy and infrastructure disputes. The ADC congratulates the whole team on their significant achievements, and their recent win as 2020 ADR Practice Group of the Year.
Judith Levine – Arbitrator of the Year 2020 After spending 17 years working abroad in private sector dispute resolution and international civil service, 2020 Arbitrator of the Year Judith Levine has had a busy arbitration practice since returning home to Sydney. In the past 12 months, Judith has acted as a sole, presiding and co-arbitrator in disputes spanning across the ICC, SIAC and CAS Rules and as an independent privilege inspector appointed in an investor-state dispute under UNCITRAL.
In addition to her in-depth expertise on public international law, foreign investment and commercial contract cases, Judith has drawn on her wealth of experience in arbitral procedures to assist with her process management, having worked for over a decade at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, and more recently (and more locally) in her service as Vice-President of ACICA. Pivoting to virtual proceedings has been a challenge that Judith has taken to with ease. Teaming up with the PCA and IDRC to coordinate a hybrid hearing with 65 people across London, Australia, Europe and the Middle East is just one example of her flexibility in 2020!
Making the move to run your international practise back at home, after nearly two decades away, is a big leap for anyone. “I was thrilled to receive the Arbitrator of the Year Award this year” said Judith. “The recognition reinforced my decision to move home and establish an independent arbitrator practice working on international cases from a Sydney base.”
“We have such a talented and dynamic community of arbitration professionals in Australia” continued Judith. “So many of the award winners and nominees have shown it is possible to succeed at international dispute resolution from here, especially with the technological advances everyone has had to embrace this year.”
We wholeheartedly agree. Congratulations Judith! Learn More about ADC’s Fast Track Mediation Processes ADC’s cost-effective and efficient mediation service for resolving Local Government and Financial Services disputes is an exciting new initiative to create more opportunities for access to timely, cost-efficient and private dispute resolution.
