Dear Friends & Colleagues
|
I am delighted to announce that the 5th Annual ADR Address of the Supreme Court of New South Wales will be held in person on 17 November 2022. One of Australia’s leading jurists, The Hon. Robert French AC, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, is presenting this year’s Address.
The ADR Address is part of ADC’s national Thought Leadership series. We invite you to attend this broad-church event in Sydney. For those who missed the recent South Australian ADR Address, you can catch up on ‘ADC-view’, see details below.
Think ‘summer’, think ‘it is time to reflect’ on what you, your team and your colleagues have achieved in 2022. We would like to hear about those accomplishments, and have this work recognised by your peers and clients alike. Nominations for the Australian ADR Awards open soon. See details in this Bulletin.
ADC’s 9th Annual Schools Debating Competition wrapped-up with a bang in mid-September. The Year-10 students concluded their competition with an hilarious debate on the proposition that "Debating adjudicators are the worst people to be allowed to judge debates." The Chief Adjudicator, Michael Swanson, is still recovering.

ADC in collaboration with the International Chamber of Commerce hosted the Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition (APCMC) in late August. It was a rousing success with Auckland University our Grand Final winner in a very competitive field. Congratulations to all student participants and their coaches! I also extend warm thanks to our other stellar teams; the volunteer ADR professionals, session supervisors and APCMC interns without whom this unique learning opportunity could not happen. I encourage you to peruse the APCMC blog (linked below) to gain a glimpse of the three days of competition and events.
ADC runs a dynamic internship program that creates multiple opportunities for national and international students to be introduced to new areas of ADR. I am always in awe of the creative approaches they take. In this Bulletin Nick Stewart, Auckland University, seeks to answer a question about the impact of retained power; read Nick’s take on ‘Putin and Power’ below. Aayam Shrestha, UNSW, devised, filmed and edited a 10-part series on workplace dispute resolution during his 10-day internship with ADC. We share the first part of this series with you in the Bulletin. UNSW’s international students Michael de Venecia, updates us on arbitration in the island state, and from Xiner (Philippa) Hu, we present Part-One of her review of ADR in South Korea; exploring its court-annexed mediation program. I hope that you enjoy their tremendous work as much as ADC enjoyed hosting these brilliant students.
Spring and summer dates for ADC’s Mediation Training, Refresher Days, Conflict Resolution and Expert Determination courses are linked below. Registrations are still open. I look forward to seeing you there.
Warm Regards Deborah
