Congratulations to all Teams and Coaches in the 7th Annual ADC-ICC Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition!
APCMC 2023 had 32 universities competing from across 11 countries. We welcomed teams from Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Maldives, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. Some countries were fielding teams for the first time, many returning from previous years.
Weeks out from the competition, students are presented with three complex cross border, commercial problem questions. All teams work tirelessly in preparation to understand the law and prepare their negotiation strategy. The competition starts with three preliminary rounds across two days. Given time zones, they may be competing early morning or late at night. To a person the teams did not miss a beat and were online across 48 sessions ready to negotiate to an incredibly high standard. Frankly our judges were in awe!
Students are mediated by a professional mediator and judged by experienced ADR professionals. The mediation skills and feedback they

provide an exceptional opportunity for students to build a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of mediation practice, and how they can use it to best effect as young lawyers and business leaders. Thank you to our many ADR professionals who volunteered their valuable time to support the students’ learning.
To meet this year's brilliant teams and all prize winners, please see the APCMC 2023 Results and Programme.
Thank you to the International Chamber of Commerce Australia and the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry for taking the lead in developing the APCMC in 2017, and for their collaboration with the Australian Disputes Centre over the past four years. Our warm thanks too to Peter McMullin AM, The Good Business Foundation and Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry for the vision in bringing this competition to Australia and your ongoing support.
The number of Expert Determination appointments ADC makes is increasing. To support all current and new Expert Determiners we are holding a 1-day programme on 27 September. This course will now be in person. I encourage you to sign up today.
Last but not least, I am off to my home-town of Wellington to speak at the National Mediation Conference 3-6 September. I hope to see you there!

APCMC 2023 – Insights from a Team Coach
Irene Ma, University of Sydney
APCMC provides a unique and valuable learning experience for our students to learn negotiation skills in a commercial mediation setting. As the coach of a competing team, I have seen our students challenged by the complex and real-life simulated moot problems presented to them. APCMC is mediated by professional mediators and adjudicated by a senior panel of ADR practitioners, and allows all participants to have a taste of what commercial mediation looks like in real life. I have observed my team learn and improve enormously during the competition, from their first round to the third round in the Preliminary sessions.

“How stakeholders can more effectively resolve environmental disputes”
National Mediation Conference
Wellington, 3-6 September 2023
In a world beginning to witness the devastating impacts of our changing climate, from Maui’s devastating wildfires to Australia’s ongoing reckoning with its responsibility to protect First Nations country, it is more important than ever that Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioners develop an understanding of how they can effectively approach environmental disputes.
At the upcoming National Mediation Conference, Wellington on 6 September 2023, Deborah Lockhart, CEO of the Australian Disputes Centre, will be discussing ADC’s cutting edge work in environmental disputes - including evaluating case studies across such diverse jurisdictions as Australia, New Zealand and Cambodia. The session will be a unique opportunity for mediators, as well as anybody involved in
the ADR space, to learn how their practice can adapt to new environmental challenges by integrating interdisciplinary research spanning law, anthropology, social sciences, dispute resolution principles, and more - elements which overlap and complement one another.
Ultimately, this session will illuminate how ADR practitioners can help some of our world’s most vulnerable communities access a seat at the mediation table, maintain responsible commercial practices, and work together towards finding equitable and effective remedies to the environmental issues that are likely to define the 21st century.
